How do I become a volunteer?

There are a limited number of volunteering tickets and they go on a ‘first come first serve’ basis according to when we receive your payment.

Staff meeting upon arrival for kitchen volunteers

Kitchen volunteers should arrive in the morning of the arrival day and join the staff meeting in the kitchen at 10.00 am. During the meeting you will be given some general information and instructions about the procedures, ‘dress code’ and receive your schedule.

KITCHEN VOLUNTEER

You will work in the kitchen preparing the food and doing things like washing the produce, carrying boxes, opening durian and jackfruits, sorting out the fruit, rinsing and chopping vegetables and fruit, blending smoothies, juicing oranges, taking out the garbage, filling up jugs with water, preparing meal cards and arranging the food in the dining hall.

You will also be doing household duties around the kitchen and dining hall like wiping tables, taking out the trash, cleaning the kitchen after use, collecting trolleys with dirty cutlery, collecting dirty kitchen equipment from the kitchen, washing things by hand that does not go in the dishwasher, putting back clean cutlery and most importantly washing up all the dirty dishes from the meals. The school has a large dishwasher where you have to arrange the plates, cups etc. in large trays before they are placed in the dishwasher. You will also have to wash the floor in the kitchen and wipe surfaces to make the kitchen ready for the next meal. You should be open to any kind of cleaning task that is related to the kitchen and the dining area, including cleaning up when people eat outside.

You will be working alongside some very experienced raw food chefs and therefore have a chance to learn from the best. Working in the kitchen is both a lot of fun, hard work and also a great way to get to know new people and learn about food preparation. Learn more:

– help carry and arrange boxes of fruit and veggies in the basement
– join the festival staff meeting
– lead the volunteer meeting upon arrival together with the head chefs

DURING THE FESTIVAL

During the festival the kitchen coordinator will be in charge of all the volunteers. This means answering their questions, making sure they show up on time (and if not then go and get them) and that they do their job in general. The KC will also be delegating tasks to the volunteers (except tasks directly related to food preparation) like getting them to:

– arrange the food in the dining hall nicely according to the chefs wishes
– clean the kitchen and dining hall after each meal
– make the kitchen equipment ready to use before each meal
– make sure there are always water available in the jugs in the dining hall
– put all the leftovers (which can be stored) after the meals in the refrigerator
– write meal cards for all the various dishes (especially important are any possible allergic items like nuts, celery etc. and then salt and spices, if any)
– carry empty cardboard boxes and trash to the containers

The kitchen coordinator will also have to:

– change volunteers around on the schedule if needed
– fill out special needs forms for kids if parents ask
– help the speakers prepare for their food demos 30 minutes before or get a volunteer to do it
– check the dining hall before meals to make sure it is ok (clean, chairs in place, napkins, cutlery etc.)

AFTER THE FESTIVAL

– help pack up the kitchen and produce the day after the festival
– be present at the evaluation meeting after the guests have left

The kitchen coordinator does not have to be in the kitchen all the time but must come by often and check up on things. When things are running smoothly you can go and watch lectures or take a break. It is mainly before and during the beginning of the food preparation and when the food is being served plus when the cleaning people start that your help is required.
